The Shenandoah Middle School renovation demonstrates the capability of balancing strict historical preservation with modern structural demands. Managing a legacy institutional property under Miami-Dade County Public Schools necessitated replacing the facility's original wood windows with high-performance systems capable of safeguarding students without altering the building’s historic visual character. Working alongside Thornton Construction and Saltz Michelson Architects, the team selected Sol-A-Trol Series 3000 Projected and Casement Impact Windows to deliver an uncompromising commercial-grade solution that satisfies both stringent municipal standards and Florida Building Code compliance.
Engineered to withstand the extreme pressures of the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, these heavy-duty aluminum windows were custom-configured to replicate the original historic profiles, sightlines, and large openings of the original wood fenestration. This allowed the design team to preserve the mid-century aesthetic integrity of the educational campus while introducing advanced building envelope technology. Beyond structural wind-load performance, the custom Series 3000 configuration successfully addressed critical life-safety mandates by integrating fully compliant emergency Egress openings seamlessly into the historic frame profiles.
