The Southwest Miami High School renovation project highlights the intersection of strict structural engineering and vibrant architectural branding. Tasked with replacing 20,000 square feet of outdated fenestration, the project team needed a high-performance solution that could withstand South Florida's severe weather while integrating a customized aesthetic. Managing this extensive institutional footprint required systems capable of executing large-span configurations under Miami-Dade County Public Schools guidelines.
To meet the architectural vision of McHarry and Associates and the execution demands of O.H.L. Construction, Sol-A-Trol engineered a dual-system strategy. The primary building facades utilized the Sol-A-Trol Series 5000 Impact Window Wall system, customized with a specialized multicolored impact glass layout to match the official school branding. This slab-to-slab fenestration design provides structural stability for massive spans, shifting wind-load stresses directly to the concrete slabs while creating a dynamic, color-blocked building envelope.
Complementing the sweeping glazed expanses, Sol-A-Trol Series 3000 Impact Casement windows were incorporated to deliver target ventilation and precise operational control. Both systems were fabricated from heavy-duty 6063-T6 aluminum alloy frames to ensure maximum corrosion resistance and longevity. The final installation successfully brings the educational campus into full High-Velocity Hurricane Zone compliance while delivering a striking, modernized visual identity.
